NASA scientist to discuss nanotechnology

UTC Riverbend Technology Institute, NASA Ames Research Center (Center for Nanotechnology), Girvan Institute of Technology, and the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology presents Meyya Meyyappan, Ph.D., Director for the Center for Nanotechnology Tuesday, December 7, 4:30-6 p.m., Fletcher Hall, Room 212 at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

This free event is open to the public, and seating will be available on a first come, first served basis. 

As an enabling technology, nanotechnology’s impact will be felt across many economic sectors: electronics/computing/data storage, materials and manufacturing, health and medicine, energy, transportation, environment and national security. This presentation will outline these impacts with some examples in each of the sectors, assessment of opportunities and the challenges to commercialization.

Meyya Meyyappan is Director of the Center for Nanotechnology as well as Senior Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA. He is a founding member of the Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnlogy (IWGN) established by the Office of  Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The IWGN is responsible for putting together the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Among many distinguished positions that Meyyappan holds, in 2004, he was awarded the President’s Meritorious Award for his contributions to nanotechnology.

The Riverbend Technology Institute (RTI) at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in collaboration with city, industry, and business development leaders was designed to respond to the growing technology needs of the public and private sectors. The vision for the RTI is guided by the overarching mission of  increasing and sustaining IT industries in the regional Tennessee Valley corridor. Major efforts of the RTI are to facilitate the development of high technology industries, share experiences and work collaboratively regarding the development and understanding of technology and its applications.
