Harvey Honored for Years of Teaching at UTC
The Department of
Accounting and the College of Business Administration
held a luncheon in honor of Durwood Harvey's 50 years of teaching
accounting at the University. Harvey became a full-time assistant professor
at UC from 1948 through 1951. After spending four years in public accounting,
he has taught continuously at the University as an adjunct professor.
"It's been a good experience to say the least. The old saying ‘By
your
pupils you will be taught’ is so true, I have learned a lot from
them," Harvey said.
The current semester will be the last Harvey teaches at UTC. Dr. John
Fulmer, Associate Dean in the College of Business Administration called
Harvey, “one of the most dependable people I know, one of
the most agreeable people I know, one of the most respected people I
know, and one of the most
adaptable people I know.”
Fulmer said Harvey had to be adaptable to work with students for seven
decades.
“One place Durwood is not adaptable is his grading scale!” Fulmer
said.
Still, through the years, students had glowing comments about the dedicated
teacher. In 2002, students said, “He is so easy to understand,” and “He
is so approachable,” and “I learned a lot.”
Harvey is a graduate of Chattanooga High School. He earned his
undergraduate degree in Business Administration from UC where he was
a
member of the Alpha Society, Pi Gamma Mu, Blue Key, president of the
Honor
Council, and he was a recipient of the Chattanooga Times four year
scholarship. He received the Master of Science degree in Accounting from
UT Knoxville. Harvey is a member of the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants, Chattanooga Chapter, Tennessee Society of Certified
Public
Accountants.
Harvey served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 and attained the rank of
Corporal. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart
with
Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, and two Presidential Unit
Citations.
In 1964, Harvey was named Vice President of Chatem, Inc. His current
title
is Financial Consultant.
Fulmer said he believes that “to teach is to touch a life.” He
added, “Durwood, there are so many lives that you have touched
in a positive way, and you don’t even know all the ways you have
helped people. To say that we are indebted to you is a genuine understatement,” Fulmer
said.
