ACE Names Novobilski to Fellows Program

Andrew NonobilskiDr. Andrew Novobilski, Professor and Department Head, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, has been selected by The American Council on Education (ACE) as one of 39 college and university senior faculty and administrators for the 2007-08 ACE Fellows Program.

Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program—the longest running leadership development program in the United States—focuses on identifying and preparing senior leadership for the nation’s colleges and universities.

“We are delighted that Dr. Novobilski has built upon his experience as a technology entrepreneur to create a successful career in higher education,” said UTC Chancellor Roger Brown. “We value his contributions to the University and his ability to create opportunities for student success.”

In 2000, Novobilski began his career at UTC, becoming Department Head, Department of Computer Science in 2003. In 2005, his departmental duties were expanded to include Electrical Engineering. Prior to his tenure at UTC, Novobilski served as President and Principal of NovoTech Incorporated.

Novobilski received the Doctor of Philosophy with emphasis in Artificial Intelligence, The University of Texas at Arlington; Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering, with emphasis in Computational Mathematics, University of Texas at Arlington; and the Bachelor of Science, Computer Science, Drexel University.

"We’re extremely pleased with the incoming class," said Marlene Ross, director of the Fellows Program. "The individuals selected have demonstrated strong leadership ability. The Fellows Program will sharpen and enhance their leadership skills, broaden their perspectives, and prepare them to effectively address issues of concern to the higher education community."

The ACE Fellows Program combines seminars, interactive learning opportunities, campus events, and placement at another higher education institution to condense years of on-the-job experience and skills development into a single semester or year.

During the placement, Fellows observe and work with a college or university president and other senior officers at a host institution, attend decision-making meetings and focus on issues of concern.Projects have included implementing a post tenure review process, developing a teaching/learning center, and recruiting and retaining faculty of color.

The Fellows also engage in leadership and management activities to enhance their knowledge about the challenges and opportunities confronting higher education.

The 2007-08 class will bring to 1,576 the number of higher education leaders who will have participated in the program since its inception. Of those who have participated in the first 42 years of the program, more than 300 Fellows have gone on to serve as chief executive officers of more than 350 colleges and universities.In addition, more than 1,300 have served as provosts, vice presidents or deans.
