UTC Business Finance major Katy Wilkerson, a three-year recipient of the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation, will be featured in a broadcast by WTVC-TV NewsChannel 9 on Tuesday, February 20.  Reporter Calvin Sneed will tell Wilkerson’s story on the day of the Grand Opening of the MaryEllen Locher Breast Resource Center, of the Memorial Health Care System.

Wilkerson’s mother, Kristen Wilkerson, has survived breast cancer following chemotherapy and a double mastectomy.

“I had no idea how people were affected by cancer—it is not just a woman, but it is often an entire family. We hear about women and breast cancer, but for the men in a survivor’s life, the experience is life changing,” Wilkerson said.

Wilkerson, a junior, enjoys management classes, and upon graduation from the UTC College of Business, she aspires to work with a financial consultant or in a bank.

As a recipient of the scholarship, Wilkerson said she felt embraced by the support of those who took up the cause of breast cancer awareness.  “I am trying to help spread the word,” Wilkerson said.

Assistance through the MaryEllen Locher Resource Center at Memorial Hospital is free to all patients, family members, and friends.  The center offers a variety of resources, according to the center’s website at
Locher, co-anchor for WTVC News Channel 9 for 20 years, died Thursday, June 9, 2005.  Her career in the Tennessee Valley began in 1985.
