Dr. Susan M. Phillips
Dean and Professor of Finance, The George Washington University

Dr. Susan Phillips has served as Dean and Professor of Finance at The George Washington University School of Business since 1998. Prior to joining GWU, she served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from December 1991 through June 1998.

From 1974-1984 Dr. Phillips was an Assistant/Associate Professor of Finance at The University of Iowa.  During this period, she was a Brookings Economic Policy and an SEC Fellow. In 1978, Dr. Phillips returned to the University of Iowa as Acting Assistant Vice President for Finance and University Services. In 1981, Dr. Phillips was appointed to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.  She became Chairman of the CFTC in 1983 and continued to serve as Chairman until 1987. Dr. Phillips then returned to the University of Iowa as Vice President for Finance and University Services (1987-1991).

Dr. Phillips is a member of the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company's Board of Directors. She also serves on the boards of directors of the Kroger Company, the Chicago Board Options Exchange, and the National Futures Association.  She also serves as the Financial Accounting Foundation’s board of trustees.

Dr. Phillips has a B.A. in mathematics from Agnes Scott College (1967), an M.S. in finance and insurance from LSU (1971), and a Ph.D. in finance and economics from LSU (1973).

Ray V. Ryan, CFA
Patten and Patten Inc., Principal, Vice President, Portfolio Manager

Mr. Ryan joined Patten and Patten in June 1999, and serves as vice president and portfolio manager. His prior experience includes work in investment banking for SunTrust Equitable Securities Corporation. Prior to his tenure with SunTrust Equitable, Mr. Ryan worked in the Institutional Fixed-Income Sales and Trading department for Lehman Brothers.  Mr. Ryan earned the CFA designation in 2002. He is a member of the American Economic Association, and is an instructor with a leading CFA examination preparatory organization.  Mr. Ryan is a past President of the Chattanooga Society of Financial Analysts, and is a board member of several local non-profit organizations.  He is also a member of the Finance Advisory Board at UTC. Mr. Ryan graduated from Princeton University in 1989 with a degree in Economics (A.B.).

Wednesday, March 7, 2007 – “Part I: Lessons Learned-Acquisitions and Financing, Part II: Strategic Initiatives-Fiber to the Home in Chattanooga”

Gregory S. Eaves, CPA
Electric Power Board, Senior Vice President of Finance, and CFO

Greg Eaves began his career with EPB in 2004.  Mr. Eaves is responsible for cash management, corporate accounting and information systems.  He also serves as Secretary of EPB, as well as a trustee for various EPB retirement trust funds. Prior to joining EPB, Mr. Eaves was Vice President of Finance at Burner Systems International, a manufacturer of gas appliance components. During his tenure at Burner Systems, Mr. Eaves was an executive member of the merger and acquisition team that handled the due diligence, acquisition, financing, and consolidation efforts of four companies in the U.S., Europe, and Mexico.

Mr. Eaves is a native of Chattanooga, and a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  He is a member of the Accounting Advisory Board at UTC, Financial Executives International, and Tennessee Society of CPA’s.   

Thursday, March 8, 2007 – “Financing and Acquisitions”

Farzana K. Mitchell, CPA
CBL Properties, Senior Vice President – Finance

Ms. Mitchell joined CBL in 2000 as Senior Vice President in the financial services division. Prior to joining CBL, Ms. Mitchell was Vice President of Equitable Real Estate. Ms. Mitchell served the Equitable and Lend Lease Companies for 18 years in various senior financial positions and as Deputy Portfolio Manager for Equitable/Axa Financial’s mortgage portfolio. From 1976 to 1982, she served as Assistant Treasurer of IRT Property Company, a former REIT.  Ms. Mitchell is also a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in the state of Georgia.

Ms. Mitchell received her BBA degree in Economics, MBA in Accounting and an MS in Real Estate and Urban Affairs from Georgia State University.
