Business students win record number of scholarships

A record-breaking eleven students from UTC have been awarded Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) scholarships this summer.

Heather M. Baker, Kyle R. Bryant, Daniel E. Dance, Emily D. Fite, Amber D. Henderson, Sherita L. Jones, Lauren K. McPherson, Emily P. Messler, Brandi N. Parker, David W. Roberts, and Kendra A. Teffeteller were among the UTC students awarded According to Dr. Kaye Sheridan, CPA and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at UTC. A total of 129 awards were made to applicants from 25 Tennessee colleges and universities.

“Competition for these awards is intense as indicated by recipients’ average accounting GPA of 3.70 and average overall GPA of 3.66,” said Sheridan.

The awards were made based on guidelines determined by the TSCPA Scholarship Committee, including Academic Achievement – 50 percent; Previous Recipient – 5 percent; Financial Need – 25 percent; and Professor Recommendation/Leadership Skills – 20 percent.

In 2005, six TSCPA scholarships were awarded to UTC students; in 2004 nine were awarded, and from 2001-2003, seven were awarded annually.
