New SGA Officers elected

Newly elected Student Government Association (SGA) officers for 2006-2007 are: President Lydia Grafton, marketing major with a minor in communication; Vice President Bill Staley, business major with a minor in Spanish; and Treasurer Ron Hodges, who has a double major of Finance and Accounting.

graftonLydia Grafton of Nashville, Tennessee, plans to graduate in May, 2007. As the first African-American woman to serve as SGA President, Grafton is breaking new ground.

“It is an honor and an amazing privilege,” Grafton said.

Grafton wants students to get excited about SGA. “We want students to get involved with SGA, and we want to promote school spirit. We want SGA to bridge the gap between the campus and the community,” Grafton said.

A variety of issues await the new officers, according to Grafton. She wants SGA to tackle parking, housing, use of green space on campus, and communicating the finer points of the technology fee as well as to work closely with University administrators to secure more state funding, and to boost the University’s retention rates.

Grafton has served as Treasurer of SGA for 2005-2006. She is a member of both the International Student Organization and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Grafton has served as the secretary of the Student Alumni Council. She has been a marketing intern for Aramark and AmSouth Bank, and she has also been an intern with Inroads, Inc. since high school. She has been a team member for Freshman Friday. Grafton is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. She has been a member and mentor of Student Support Services. Grafton has been a cast member of the UTC production of The Vagina Monologues. She has served as a resident assistant in campus housing at Lockmiller.

Advertising is Grafton’s career choice.

Grafton graduated with honors from Pearl Cohn Comprehensive Business Magnet School. Newly elected SGA Vice President Ron Hodges graduated from the same school. “In high school, Lydia beat me for Student Body President in senior year. I had served as president of the Junior Class,” Hodges said with a smile.

staleyBill Staley of Hendersonville, Tennessee, plans to graduate in May 2008. He has held office as SGA Public Relations Director and AMA President. He has also been an SAC Ambassador, AKPsi Business Fraternity EVP, Orientation Leader, and pep rally host. He has served on the spirit initiative committee, university publications board, student conduct appeals board, parking appeals board, and at the Catholic Student Center. Staley’s career will take a turn toward public relations and advertising “with a political career somewhere in the mix.”

hodgesRon Hodges of Nashville, Tennessee plans to graduate in May, 2007. He is a charter member and Vice President of Membership for Alpha Kappa Psi, a new business fraternity. Hodges is also a charter member and Treasurer and fundraiser of the Residence Hall Association. He has served as SGA Senator, and as SGA Chair of Student Body Projects. He is Assistant Resident Director of Lockmiller Apartments. Hodges’ career aspirations include financial investments and commercial real estate.
