Biology student awarded scholarship

Malachy Nkem, a junior majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry, has received a 2006 United Negro College Fund/Merck Undergraduate Science Scholarship Award. The award includes up to $25,000 in scholarship monies.

Nkem is also eligible to attend two summer internships at Merck research facilities, one in summer 2006, and one in summer 2007. His award will cover all travel expenses for these summer programs, and he will be provided a summer stipend of $5,000. This award also allows the UTC Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences eligibility to apply for up to $10,000 in grant monies to support undergraduate research.

“We are extremely proud of this superb achievement on Malachy’s part,” said Dr. Timothy J. Gaudin, Acting Department Head of UTC Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

Award recipients have been invited to attend “Fellows Day,” to be held June 24-27 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where they will meet other award winners.

Each Fellow will be mentored by a Merck scientist for the duration of the summer internship.
