University admits record number of students

A record enrollment of 8,923 students has been recorded for Fall 2006, an increase of 267 students from Fall 2005.

“Students are responding with confidence that the UTC campus is moving in the right direction,” said Chancellor Roger Brown.  “They are also interested in the selection of courses we offer on campus.”

Yancy Freeman, director of admissions, confirmed this semester’s freshman enrollment has increased by 328 students to 1,782 this year.   Freeman said the influx of freshmen is the largest since 1988.

The implementation of new admissions programs helped make it a successful year for freshmen enrollment, according to Freeman.

The Early Bird program, introduced to make the transition from high school to college easier, has allowed incoming freshmen to receive early notification of their admission and scholarship decisions. These students also receive first choice of classes and on-campus housing, and they could register for a spring orientation or have first choice for summer orientations.

According to Freeman, 504 students signed on for spring orientation, exceeding expectations by 200 students.
