Thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Fred Obear!

The campus community recently gathered to thank Interim Chancellor Fred Obear and his wife Ruth for their year of service, and to welcome incoming Chancellor Roger Brown and his wife, Dr. Carolyn Thompson. Dr. Obear will return to the UTC Office of Development.

A picnic for faculty and staff provided good food, fun, and surprises. The Obears enjoyed receiving a variety of gifts, including a flower and plant arrangement from Jean Dake, Chair of the Exempt Staff Council; a blue and gold afghan knitted by Marge Fergason, Chair of the Employee Relations Committee; tickets to athletics events from Matt Pope; and a sign for Dr. Obear’s car that reads, “Caution, fund raiser on board,” from Bob Lyon, Vice Chancellor of University Advancement.

Later at a dessert reception of community and campus friends, Chancellor Roger Brown presented the Obears with a blue and gold glass creation from Ignis Glass Studio.

“We are here to honor the Obears for their untiring service to this institution,” Brown said. “Dr. Obear is beloved to this campus, and a nationally known leader. We are thankful for his wisdom, experience, and generosity. The Obears have extended a warm welcome to Carolyn and me.”

Student Government Association President Amy Prevost expressed her gratitude to the Obears for opening their home to the students, and for being so welcoming to each student. The crowd laughed when Prevost recounted Dr. Obear’s reticence about becoming chancellor for a second time, gently chiding him for thoroughly enjoying the one-year stint. To Mrs. Obear, Prevost paid the highest compliment.

“When I grow up, I want to be just like you,” Prevost said. To which Mrs. Obear responded, “ I haven’t grown up yet!”

From the entire campus community, thank you to the Obears for a job well done.
