UTC South Campus to honor Probasco

Scott L. Probasco, Jr. speaks
at the dedication ceremony

Calling himself a cheerleader and not a visionary, Scott L. Probasco, Jr. modestly deflected accolades from University and community leaders as the South Campus of UTC was dedicated in his honor. A ceremony was held on the corner of 8th and Baldwin Streets.

Probasco was responsible for donating valuable property where UTC Place Apartments, Tommie Brown Academy, the UTC Community Outreach Partnership Center, and the UT Sim Center at Chattanooga are now located.

Saying it was a team effort that helped create over $100 million in development, Probasco said, “The public and private worked so close together. We are blessed with many people who love this institution.”

A native Chattanoogan, Probasco is Chair Emeritus of the Executive Committee of SunTrust Bank in Chattanooga. His grandfather founded the financial institution that became American National and later SunTrust. Probasco has a B.A. in History from Dartmouth College, and he also attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.

His involvement in the Chattanooga community is legendary with involvement with the Baylor School, the Chamber of Commerce, Benwood Foundation, Bethel Bible Village, the Community Foundation, and the United Way of Greater Chattanooga.

Probasco is married to the former Betty Rowland (“Spark”) of Lexington, Kentucky. She is a former professional golfer.

An initial bequest from the estate of Mr. Burkett Miller in 1977 established the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise at UTC, which includes lectures by nationally prominent speakers. The chair’s mission is to help citizens understand the principles which form the foundation of the American economic system.
Probasco and Brown celebrate the dedication.
