Smith named UTC Coordinator of the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner Program

Chris Smith, the Kay Chitty Professor of Memorial Healthcare System in the School of Nursing at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has been appointed the Coordinator of the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

"I am delighted that Professor Chris Smith has accepted the position of Coordinator of the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program,” said Dr. Kay Lindgren, Director & Associate Professor of the UTC School of Nursing. “The FNP program is moving forward under her leadership. Chris has made wonderful contributions in the area of teaching, service and scholarship while serving as the School of Nursing's Kay Chitty Professor. In addition, we need to recognize that today's students pursuing the MSN FNP degree are having to juggle work, family and school. Chris Smith has been extremely creative in helping these students find their way and be successful."

Smith spent eight years as a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner in the Westside Family Practice Center, a division of Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga. She joined the School of Nursing at UTC in 2001, when she became an Assistant Professor and holder of The Kay K. Chitty Professorship. Smith holds a joint appointment with the University and Memorial Hospital.

Smith has shared her talents by serving in a variety of community roles, including:

  • past president and board member of Chattanooga Cares
  • St. Barnabus Nursing Home Board of Directors
  • UTC Committee on Wellness
  • Reviewer for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation—Fitzgerald Health Education Associates NP Student Scholarship applications
  • Weldon F. Osbourne Foundation—Board of Trustees

After earning her undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) at Vanderbilt University, Smith received the Master of Science in Nursing Degree, Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration at UTC, and she is pursuing the Doctor of Science in Nursing Degree at East Tennessee State University.
