GEARUP for college at UTC provides successful high school program

Jason Dorsey signs autographs

Nationally acclaimed author and motivational speaker Jason Dorsey recently told more than 600 students at Bradley Central High School and Ridgeland High School that his purpose was to tell others to stop making excuses. His inspiration came from a blind woman who ran track.

GEAR UP for college purchased Dorsey’s book, Graduate to Your Perfect Job for the juniors at both schools. GEAR UP is a federally funded program that promotes postsecondary education, targets low income, first generation college attending students in Bradley County and Walker County. It is a program of The Center for Community Career Education at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Dorsey has been featured on NBC’s Today Show and ABC’s The View and has recently been on the comedy tour with blah and blah. His first book, Graduate to Your Perfect Job was written when he was only 18 years old. He has also written Violence Not Allowed: Stopping School Violence Starts With You! and was a contributing author of Chicken Soup for The Soul.

Dorsey mingled with his student audience, and spoke directly to them. He told about his parents’ divorce and how they lost their home.

“The students gathered around afterwards to ask more questions and get an autograph,” said Sandy Cole, Director, Center for Community Career Education. “The surveys that GEAR UP handed out afterwards say students want Jason to come back!”
