UTC's Stepanske heads literacy education program

K-12 teachers at McConnell and Howard schools will be instructed by Dr. Jeanette Stepanske, UTC College of Education and Applied Professional Studies, with a program called "Changing Traditional Reading Instruction Through a Balanced Literacy Approach."

The program is made possible by a Dwight D. Eisenhower grant funded by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

Stepanske plans to train all K-12 teachers at McConnell and Howard schools to integrate literacy across the curriculum. The teachers will be provided with skills, materials and professional support to teach literacy using the Four Block Balanced Literary Approach, a program that includes reading, writing, working with words and self-selected readings.
