Campus Memorial Service Planned for UTC Professor

Dr. Bernard Benson, professor of the UTC Teacher Preparation Academy and Challenger Learning Center Professor died last night at his home. A memorial service is planned for Friday, December 8 at 2 p.m. in Patten Chapel.

Benson came to UTC in 1970. He was heavily involved as a faculty representative in the establishment of the UTC Challenger Center, working to infuse the Center's programs into UTC's teacher education program. He was one of the first five recipients of a U.C. Foundation Professorship and the first to receive the Dean Roy L. Stinnett Award for Distinguished Service to the University. He has served as president of both the Tennessee Academy of Science and the Tennessee Science Teachers Association.

Benson directed both TVA's Water Quality Monitoring Network and the Science and Environmental Resource Center at UTC. His work continued in water quality monitoring through his involvement in the environmental programs at the Challenger Center.

Benson earned the B.S. Ed in biology and chemistry from Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois; he received the M.S. in biology from Northern Illinois University, and he completed his doctoral work in science education and botany and received the Ph. D. at the University of Iowa in Iowa.
