Beat Hunger with UTC Percussion Ensemble

The UTC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Monte Coulter, UTC Music Department, will present "Beat Hunger 2000" on Monday, November 20 at 8 p.m.-9 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Cener.

This will be the fifth annual "Beat Hunger" benefit for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, and has become a Chattanooga tradition, and a symbolic beginning of the Christmas giving season.

Pieces to be performed include transcriptions for mallet instruments by Haydn and Elgar, as well as works written specifically for percussion by Mark Ford, Michael Colgrass, and others. A special treat is "Ku Ka Illimoku" by Christopher Rouse. This piece was commissioned by the Syracuse Symphony Percussion Section, and is a "tribal war-dance." Coulter says earplugs are optional.

"Please come, and bring your family! My 3-year-old can testify that percussion concerts are child-friendly!" Coulter says.

Suggested admission is 2 non-perishable food items or a $2 donation to the Community Kitchen. Last year it took three trips to haul the food away.
