Syndicated Columnist Speaks at UTC

Nationally syndicated columnist Dr. Walter Williams told an audience at the UTC Fine Arts Center he would like to see a spending restraint on Congress by reconvening the constitutional convention.

Williams said he did not have a choice for a presidential candidate. He had a Challenge for taxpayers: to turn down the money their congressman brings back to the district in favor of keeping to what he interprets as the tenets of the Constitution.

Williams came to campus as part of the fall 2000 Burkett Miller Lecture Series presented by the Scott L. Probasco Jr. Chair of Free Enterprise.

At the turn of the century, Williams said taxpayers were paying $60 a year. Today, the average taxpayer pays $8,000 a year, according to Williams.
