Outreach Programs & Information

The triad mission of the College moves our region forward. CECS’s community engagement is key to its fulfillment of that mission. The College’s outreach and engagement initiatives make a difference in the lives of our students and those in communities across our region.

Enabling social and economic progress through mutually beneficial outreach partnerships enhances our students’ experiential learning, and strengthens the value of their degrees. Outreach partnerships provide exposure to real-world, industry environments, allowing our students to enter the workforce with applicable hands-on experience and critical thinking skills.

The internships, senior design capstone projects with public and private sector partners, service efforts by the College’s student organizations, and other outreach initiatives inspire and empower scholarship, public service, and entrepreneurism while expanding the College’s service learning and civic engagement.

School Visits


The CECS welcomes the opportunity to visit schools and talk to students about careers, college, degrees and other related subjects.  These visits are supported college staff, professors, students, student organizations and industry partners. 

We can cover a number of subjects, such as, what people do in engineers and computer science careers, job availability, pay rates, what it takes to retire and the importance of a good job, personal experiences, interview skills, resume strengths and other subjects.

Anyone at the college can coordinate a school visit.  In addition, the college outreach coordinator will reach out to schools to schedule visits.  It is requested that all visits be communicated to the outreach coordinator, even if you do not need any support for the visit.  In this way, the college can maximize school visits with the resources available.

The Success Center has a distribution list for department heads, staff, students and other that have expressed an interest in supporting school visits.  If you are interested in being notified of a school visit, please email CECS-SuccessCenter@utc.edu.

If you have a school you would like us to reach out too, please let the Success Center know and we will try to schedule a visit.

Career Fair

The College of Engineering and Computer Science holds a Career Fair twice a year, the first Wednesday of March and November, within the Engineering, Math and Computer Science Building (EMCS). This event was started at the request of the students within the college. Having the event schedule the same time every year allow you to pre-plan and be present at all the events.

Residential College (CECS RC)

A Residential College provides a unique atmosphere for residents who share common interests and cultivate an environment that supports personal growth through academic and social programming.  A Residential College is a clustering of students who share academic or social and cultural interests. These students also take classes together. Take the time to read about the different opportunities to get involved in Housing and Residence Life here at UTC!.

CECS Seminar Series

In support of CECS’ teaching, research, and service mission, the College launched a Seminar Series beginning Fall 2016.  As a further  outreach commitment to students, faculty, and the extended community, the Speaker Series is open to the public. The presentations in the Speaker Series provide opportunities for sharing both cutting-edge  information from noted researcher in various fields as well as experience and timely insights from community leaders.

Project Lead The Way’s mission is to prepare students for the global economy. PLTW accomplishes this through world-class curriculum, high-quality professional development, and an engaged network.


Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM (science, technology,  engineering and math) education curricular programs used in schools. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, PLTW exists to prepare students for the global economy through its world-class curriculum, high-quality professional development, and an engaged network of educators, students, universities, and professionals.  PLTW’s comprehensive curriculum has been designed by PLTW teachers, university educators, engineering and biomedical professionals, and school administrators to promote critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and real-world problem solving skills in students. The hands-on, project-based program engages students on multiple levels, exposes them to areas of study that they typically do not pursue, and provides them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success.

PLTW at UTC - UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science has been the official PLTW University Affiliate for the state of Tennessee since 2004.

The Chattanooga Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers sponsors a biannual ACT preparation workshop for area high school students usually in Fall and Spring semesters. NSBE members and CECS faculty members volunteer to teach test content and test taking strategies and administer a sample ACT test followed by discussion of answers.

2018 marks the ninth year the UTC NSBE chapter has sponsored this semi-annual ACT workshops for area high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as part of the chapter’s community service commitment. The collegiate membership in NSBE is open to any undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science Student Ambassadors Program is a new initiative designed to provide service to the College, the University, and the extended Chattanooga community by organizing student representatives of CECS as goodwill ambassadors. The students provide assistance to the College in welcoming potential students, CECS alumni, friends, community partners, and visitors. The Ambassadors also provide information and support events and activities sponsored by the College. Students enrolled in each of the College’s disciplines comprise the Ambassador Corp, and are a welcome addition to all aspects of CECS outreach.

Applications for new Ambassadors are available in Fall and Spring.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science Community Service Internship Program is another example of our community service commitment. By partnering with community agencies, the internship program makes a difference in the lives of our student interns, and the life of our community. The CECS Community Service Internship pairs CECS undergraduate students with nonprofit organizations and government agencies to address community-identified projects in the Chattanooga region. The goal of the Internship program is to give students in engineering and computer science opportunities to gain real-world problem solving experience while contributing toward the Greater Chattanooga community.
