Dr. Butler is a UC Foundation Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received his B.B.A. degree in Management Information Systems (2001) from the University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. degree with a concentration in Strategic Management and support area of Organizational Behavior/Human Resource Management (2009) from Florida State University. While an undergraduate, he started his own computer networking and IT support business. After college he took a job as a Quality Control Manager for a company that specialized in decision support systems for hospitals. It was during this time he was accepted into a study abroad program sponsored by the U.S. Congress and German  Bundestag to study in Germany for one year. Part of this requirement was to work in an internship. After the program was over, the internship was turned into a full time job, and he remained in Germany for two more years. While working in Germany he participated in rebuilding operations in the United Kingdom, developed and managed international partnerships, aided in mergers and acquisitions, explored expansion options into China, and participated in various aspects of the strategic planning for the company. He coordinated communications across 10 subsidiaries, multiple partnerships across the globe, and the Headquarters in Germany.
Butler has published articles in such outlets as the journal of Management, the Journal of Managerial Issues, and Business Horizons. He also serves on the editorial board for the journal Strategic Management Review. In addition, his research has been presented internationally at several conferences. Dr. Butler has also co-authored a book chapter on merger and acquisition integration. His research interests focus on mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. His current research focus has been on voluntary disclosures and ethics from the C-Suite, and examining personal traits regarding perceptions of abusive supervision. He teaches Strategic Management at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, International Management at the undergraduate level, Organizational Behavior in the online MBA program at UTC, and teaches faculty-led study abroad programs that take students to both Mexico and Germany on an annual basis. he was also invited to teach in the inaugural International Week at Ostfalia University in Wolfsburg Germany. Dr. Butler received a 2014 UTC Think Achieve Award for his use of experiential learning methods in the classroom. 
He is active in the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, and the Strategic Management Society. He has been quoted in sources such as the Wall Street Journal and the Huffington Post.
