The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announces the Westbrook Scholarship Program for 2020. Awards of $14,000 (over 4 years) will be presented to as many as seven entering freshmen majoring in Chemistry or Physics. Once awarded these scholarships are automatically renewed provided the student meets specific academic requirements. The Westbrook scholarship can be added to other University scholarships and the Tennessee Lottery scholarship. The Howard L. Westbrook Scholarship fund was established in 1993 by alumnus Howard L. Westbrook of Fairhope, AL., Class of 1958, and is open to all applicants regardless of race, color, creed, or sex with the following qualifications:

  • Student must be accepted for admission to or currently enrolled at the University Tennessee Chattanooga.
  • Complete a course in high school chemistry or physics with an A or B.
  • Attain a high school grade point average of 3.5 or above.
  • Earn a composite score of 26 or above on the ACT exam. (optional in 2021)
  • Declare chemistry or physics as the major at UTC.

While the Westbrook is a merit scholarship, financial need will also be considered during the selection process. Eligible majors include all BS Chemistry degrees (including chemistry, biochemistry, and STEM education concentrations) and BS Physics degrees (including physics, biophysics, and STEM education concentrations). An undergraduate degree in chemistry or physics is ideal for anyone with an interest in research, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, forensics, industry, teaching, patent law, environmental issues, materials, or other science and technology related areas.

A separate “Application for Admission” to the university must be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions at UTC by February 1, 2020. The completed Westbrook application (submitted online) and two letters of recommendation (emailed) are due February 14, 2020.
