AP® U.S. Government and Politics
Amy Andrews teaches AP U.S. Government and Politics at Centreville High School in the Fairfax County Public School District in Northern Virginia.
As an AP teacher for ten years, Ms. Andrews believes any student can be successful in U.S. Government and Politics with the right tools. She has worked with students in high schools in Nevada and Virginia with varying levels of experience with AP classes. Her course uses skill based instructional strategies while presenting the content. There is also a strong emphasis on relating current events to Constitutional principles. Ms. Andrews has substantially increased the enrollment and pass rate in her schools. As a presenter, she provides numerous strategies and resources which can be adapted to any classroom; as well as a structured format for ensuring the course adheres to the 2018/2019 redesign.
Ms. Andrews has extensive professional development training via conferences and institutes across the United States and uses these experiences to enhance her classroom and others’. She has been an AP reader since 2010 and workshop consultant since 2017. As a leader of the AP cohort for the Clark County School District, AP teachers were invited to monthly trainings focusing on the free response portion of the exam. In Fairfax County, Ms. Andrews creates original FRQs, adhering to the redesign, to be shared with teachers across the district.
Ms. Andrews has been formally honored by her students, colleagues, administration, district, and community for efforts as an educator. She was invited to be her Congressman’s guest at the 2014 State of the Union. After mentoring multiple student teachers, the majority became current AP U.S. Government Politics teachers.
Amy Andrews holds a BA in Teaching of Social Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction for Secondary Social Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
