Part 1: Making Connections 

Teachers explore artistic elements and develop arts integrated learning experiences to facilitate in their classrooms between November 2019 and May 2020.


Part 2: Sharing Victories 

Teachers come back in May 2020, recharge, and share victories about how teaching arts integrated units of studies supported their students needs. 

Why explore SEL through an Arts Integrated Lens? 

“It’s not that I’m so smart. It’s just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein

An underlying perception of why arts education is important for young children emphasizes the value of joyful learning, building confidence, celebrating differences, and discovering one’s unique qualities. Cultivating the whole child is familiar language in education, yet increased attention on academic performance sometimes limits a child’s ability to fully develop their expressive abilities.

As many education providers share “solutions” for preparing children for the world around them, we find ourselves in the land of “buzzwords.” Social Emotional Learning, however, is increasingly recognized as vital to learning for all students. The foundation for any learning model to succeed requires developing a child’s life skills and fostering a growth mindset. 

Driving questions for the 2019-2020 Arts Learning Lab include: 

  • How does Social Emotional Learning (SEL)/Arts Integration foster a growth mindset?
  • What teachable skills support developing a growth mindset in children?


The 2019-2020 Arts Learning Lab welcomes Dr. Eric Engdahl!


Under the guidance of Dr. Eric Engdahl, participants will learn how to design and implement arts integrated units of study that target Social Emotional Learning outcomes. Dr. Engdahl is the Chair of the Department of Teacher Education at California State University (CSU) East Bay, as well as the Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist.  He teaches standards-based visual and performing arts methods to undergraduates, multiple-subject credential candidates, and masters students in the Early Childhood Education program.  His classes cover how to effectively integrate visual and performing arts across the curricula.  He teaches single subject methods courses in visual art, social studies, physical education and music.  In addition to teaching at CSU East Bay, he has taught in the Actor Training Program at Solano College, Wright State University, and Florida International University.  He works as a consultant and artist in the classroom with many schools in the East Bay area.  Dr. Engdahl is currently writing on how the arts provide a natural connection to social emotional learning.
