UTC is dedicated to helping our students achieve the most from their college experience. Living on campus gives students opportunities that can’t be experienced anywhere else. From living close to campus resources to a variety of room options to on-site maintenance staff, living on campus provides opportunities for growth, diversity and responsible living. The Housing and Residence Life department consists of 10 on-campus complexes; two suite-style and eight apartment-style, all with a variety of shared and private spaces:

When Noble was looking at colleges, he considered the surrounding city as much as the course offerings and campus life. “I wasn’t just looking for a place to go to school. I wanted a place to call home. UTC’s location in Chattanooga really appealed to me. It’s one of the top cities for young professionals right now. I can see myself staying here after I graduate,” he said. “I love how close I was to everything. I could wake up in the morning and be in class in just a few minutes. The dining halls, the library and the gym are just a short walk away.” The liveliness of campus life also appeals to Nobel, who spent most of his childhood growing up on the outskirts of New York City. “Some nights, I walked to Crossroads for dinner and see an event happening at Chamberlain Pavilion. Living on campus keeps you better connected to your fellow students and to the university as a whole.”

“My place was set up like a real apartment. I had my own bedroom and a full kitchen. It was big enough to where I could have people over without worrying about not having space for everyone,” he said. “UTC definitely has some of the best housing.” In between classes and club meetings, Noble likes to spend time on Chattanooga’s riverfront. “The best of what Chattanooga has to offer is right next to campus. You don’t even need a car. Everything is within walking or biking distance.” 5

It’s definitely more convenient, especially when it’s crunch time for exams. Tearanne Brown knew she wanted to go to UTC after she got a preview of campus life from her older brother. “My brother got his undergraduate degree from UTC, and he didn’t bring his car with him during the first two years. My family would visit him on holidays, and he would show us around. I really liked it,” she said. When it was Tearanne’s turn to come to college, she immediately liked the amenities and convenience of living in a residence hall. “I love our apartment. It’s not your typical dorm. We have our own kitchen and washer and dryer. Superfast Wi-Fi and DirectTV are nice bonuses, too.” “It’s definitely more convenient, especially when it’s crunch time for exams. If you need to go to the library, you can be there in a few minutes instead of wasting time driving to campus. It’s also a lot easier to go to 6

campus events. When you hear about something, you can just get up and go,” Tearanne continued. For Tearanne, living on campus gives her greater access to the city of Chattanooga “My roommates and I didn’t bring our cars during our freshmen year, but it was still easy to explore Chattanooga. We just walked everywhere. Chattanooga has a good atmosphere. Everyone is so welcoming. I feel like I fit in pretty well.”

Living on campus also helped her acclimate to student life and quickly make new friends. Madison Stewart was a little apprehensive to start her freshman year living in Stagmaier Hall. She wasn’t sure how much she would like sharing a room with a roommate she didn’t know. “At first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but I loved it. My roommate and I are now best friends. The Office of Housing and Residence Life did a great job matching me with someone who complemented my personality and interests,” she said. “Sharing a room with someone else helps you grow as a person. I learned so much about myself and how to communicate better with others,” she added. Living on campus also helped her acclimate to student life and quickly make new friends. “There’s more of a community feel in Stagmaier Hall. People are always hanging out in the common areas. Living on campus means you’re always surrounded 8

by other students and have activities to do together. You wouldn’t get that if you lived in an off-campus apartment,” said Madison, a native of Columbia, Tennessee. As a student in the Innovations in Honors program, she has busy days with classes, studying and hanging out with her friends. “The great thing about UTC’s campus is there’s a lot of things to do, but it isn’t too big. Everything is located close together. You can easily go to dinner, work out at the gym and study in the library in the same night. You don’t need a car to get around campus. You can easily walk everywhere.” 9

OUR GREAT CITY Chattanooga serves as a living laboratory for our students, and we depend on the community to provide real-world learning opportunities. Nestled next to downtown Chattanooga, the UTC campus has perfect access to a thriving business environment. When class is over, students don’t have far to go to climb, glide, hike, camp, tube, float, explore, shop, eat, watch, kick back, and generally have a blast. Surrounded by mountains, rivers and lakes, Chattanooga blends the adventure of outdoor life with the opportunities of a vibrant metropolitan center. So pig out on Chattanooga-born Moon Pies and Little Debbie snacks. Quench your thirst with a Coca-Cola. See Rock City. Ride the Incline, the world’s steepest passenger railroad and visit the Chattanooga Choo Choo.
