Senior Exit Exam (ETS Proficiency Profile)
As part of our ongoing effort to upgrade the quality of our academic programs, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga requires all students to participate in a program designed to measure knowledge gained through general education courses.
As a part of this program, all undergraduate graduating seniors are required to take the ETS Proficiency Profile, a standardized multiple-choice test used to measure content areas related to basic general education (writing skills, mathematics, reading, science, and critical thinking). Aggregated results from these tests will help us to evaluate how well the University prepares students in areas of general education and thus improve the University's curriculum. Another important aspect of this test is the fact that crucial state funding for the UTC programs and services for students is directly linked to the scores of the examinees. The total testing time required for this exam is approximately one hour.
Each graduating senior will sign up to take the ETS Proficiency Profile. Exams are administered every Spring, Summer, and Fall semester. Those students WALKING in May and GRADUATING in August should take the exam during the summer administration.
Students who take the Senior Exit Exam and do not graduate DO NOT need to take the test again during their graduating semester. You only need to take the test once, regardless of the semester.
Students who fail to take the exam will not receive their diploma until it is taken. Students will still be able to walk at graduation and receive their transcripts. The student's paper diploma is the only item to remain on hold until the exit exam is completed. Once the Registrar Office is notified that the student has taken the exam, the student's diploma will be released to them.

Major Field Testing
Content specific examinations which measure skills and knowledge appropriate to specific academic fields, or to professional practice in licensure fields, such as teacher education, nursing, engineering, and physical therapy are administered to graduating seniors annually.
Licensure graduates are tested each year, while other fields are tested in the academic year prior to the scheduled academic program review. These exams are used both for Performance Funding allocation by THEC and by academic faculty for program improvement.
