What to scan
It is possible to scan just about any color image, black and white image
or text-from books, handouts, magazines, advertisements, newspapers, or
maps. You may want to consider what you're using the image for (presentation,
publication, or handout?) and whether or not the image is copyright-free
or not. Don't scan copyrighted images for publication on web pages or class
handouts unless you have permission to use the copyrighted images or if
your use does not violate copyright law. Just because you can, doesn't
mean you should.
When to scan
-
When you need an image or graphic to tell part of the story or to convey
an idea.
-
When you need a digitized image to combine with text (in handouts), on
slides, or to place on a home page.
-
When you what to manipulate part of an image or combine it with other images
electronically.

Other scanning information...
You can also scan text and ask the computer to recognize the characters
and format them into word processing documents. This is a topic for another
time!
Editing scanned images...
You can also edit and change images once they have been scanned, but
that is also another seminar topic! Ask if you want to know how!
Gather images you want to scan.
-
Get either a PC-formatted (if you use a PC) or Mac-formatted disc (preferably
1.4 MB as images tend to take up a lot of room).
-
Check to see if the Color OneScanner is on. (The green light will be on
if it is.)
-
If the scanner is not on, turn on the switch on the scanner (located on
the left hand side at the back of the scanner). The scanner must be turned
on before the computer is turned on.
-
Turn on Mac # 6 in the Faculty Lab and wait for the computer to boot up.
-
Place the image face down in the upper right hand corner of the Color OneScanner.
-
Under the apple (in the top left hand corner of the screen), select Ofoto
and wait for the application to open. When Ofoto opens there should be
at least three windows open-one will be the tool bar with pictures of different
tools to use in the program; one will be untitled; another will be the
Scan Controls.
-
Select "Prescan" from the Scan Controls window. The scanner will make lots
of noise and an image will show up on the computer monitor. The image will
have a flashing dotted box around it. If you want to crop part of the image,
click on the screen anywhere (to deselect the image).
-
From the tool bar, select (click on) the dotted box image. Click on the
upper left hand corner of the image on the screen, hold the mouse button
down, and drag it until the flashing box surrounds the part of the image
you want to scan.
-
Press the "Scan" button on the Scan Controls.
-
After the scanner scans the image, save your file. Under File on the menu
bar, select Save. (You may get a message about calibration-ignore it and
press proceed.) Type in the name of for your image. Select the format and
compression type for your image.
-
Click on Save. If your image size is too large to fit on a 1.4 MB disc,
you may need to edit or crop it or save the file to the Faculty Files folder
on the desktop of the computer for temporary storage. Then edit it in Photoshop.
-
To scan another image, select Reset from the Scan Controls and repeat the
prescanning and scanning process.
-
If you want to quit, select File and Quit from the menu bar.
