Jonathan W. Mies July 13, 2000 The panoramic view (below) is a mosaic of photographs taken from a point on the brow of Walden Ridge (elev. 540 m), just north of Chattanooga. The photos were taken in late December (1998). The view is to the east, southeast, and south, across the Valley and Ridge. Landmarks include the cooling towers of Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (az = 063), Chickamauga Lake (az = 095-100), the city of Chattanooga (az = 155-170), the point of Lookout Mountain (az = 182), and the Tennessee River (elev. 197 m, in front of Lookout Mountain). Mountains of the Blue Ridge, at a distance of 75 km, are faintly visible on the horizon (az = 090-130). The valley in the foreground (green pastures) contains Mountain Creek and is an eroded (topographically inverted) anticline (Lookout Valley anticline). Godsey Ridge marks the far side of Mountain Creek Valley. Beyond Godsey Ridge, are Stringers Ridge and Missionary Ridge. Azimuth angles and distances are also indicated on the digital relief map (far below). Click here to view the original image (3x larger than the reduced version shown below). |

Digital relief map of the Chattanooga area. Low elevations are dark green; the Cumberland plateau, Walden Ridge, Sand Mountain, and Lookout Mountain are lighter green; higher mountains of the Blue Ridge (east edge of map) are shades of yellow and light brown. Note the distinct landforms of the Plateaus (northwest corner of map), the Valley and Ridge (central), and the Blue Ridge (southeast corner). This map was rendered from USGS digital elevation data. |
