Book Club:  Teaching Minds:  How Cognitive Science Can Save Our Schools (Schank, [2011]) Join other faculty to discuss what it means to teach, have students learn, and how to change our perceptions of teaching and learning.  This group will meet for three sessions over the course of the semester, discussing the ideas in the book (and perhaps implementing some of the ideas as well).  Sign up and commit to all three sessions and we will provide you with a free copy of the book.  Fridays, 12:00 – 1:00 pm; September 13; October 11; and November 8.  Location: UC Riverbend

Tired of giving boring lectures?  Involving students through active learning encourages critical thinking and engagement in the classroom leading to higher retention rates.  In this seminar, learn about a variety of strategies to engage students for active learning in your classroom.

Incorporating Experiential Learning into your Teaching   Curious about experiential learning?  This seminar will provide an introduction to experiential learning and will provide examples of how "learning by doing" can be integrated into courses across the curriculum.  The process for designating a course section as an experiential learning course will also be discussed.

Interested in getting your course designated as an experiential learning course (Beyond the Classroom) for fall 2014?  This workshop will provide a brief introduction to experiential learning and will provide examples of courses that have integrated "learning by doing" and have been designated in the Course Sections Listing/Class Schedule.  Please bring a syllabus and/or classes or projects that you may submit as a part of an application as well as your questions about how this process works.

Rubrics:  Taking the Guesswork out of Grading  The word "rubrics" seems to be everywhere in pedagogical and accreditation literature today. Come find out how to design and develop rubrics based on common learning taxonomies. We'll also discuss using rubrics to assess student assignments as well as programmatic overall student learning outcomes.

Best Practices in Online Learning  Experience what it is like on the other end of the "electronic assignment" as you explore best practices for online teaching and learning.  This class is offered through the online environment only and requires approximately 2-3 hours of time throughout week. No face-to-face sessions will be held.

UTC Online (Blackboard) Basics  This workshop is designed to help faculty get started developing web-enhanced courses on Blackboard. Topics include an introduction to online learning and the basics of Blackboard. Learn how to make your course available, set-up your course and create a Course Menu suitable for your students. Common start-up tasks such as creating announcements, uploading documents, and Blackboard's extensive course tools will also be introduced. Participants will also learn to customize their courses to add visual interest and address pedagogical requirements. Participants are encouraged to bring any materials they wish to upload on a flash drive.

This update will bring a new look as well as many new features to Blackboard. Blackboard Course Development: Teaching Online Boot Camp Supplement your face-to-face course with online interactions and activities or prepare to take your entire course online during this two-week hybrid workshop. This workshop will test your readiness for online instruction, explore best practices in online teaching, and unpack how to create content, interaction and assessments for delivery online. Consider taking in combination with the Blackboard Tools Crash Course.  Workshop participants will meet in-person 2 times in addition to completing activities online. Course requires approximately 16 hours total (2 hours are face-to-face). The group will meet face-to-face during the second week. Specific dates and times for face-to-face meetings will be determined by participant availability.

Blackboard Tools Crash Course   This hybrid workshop will walk instructors through the most popular and effective Blackboard tools for teaching. Participants will experience Blackboard's tools first from the student's perspective before recreating content and experiences as an instructor efficiently as well as with empathy. This seminar is designed for all course types from fully online to face-to-face. Participants in this course should be familiar with the basics of Blackboard (see UTC Online (Blackboard) Basics Seminar). Consider taking in combination with the Blackboard Course Development Boot Camp. Workshop participants will meet in person for one hour in addition to completing activities online. Course requires approximately 12 hours total (1 hour is face-to-face). The group will meet face-to-face at the beginning of the course. A specific date and time for the face-to-face meeting will be determined by participant availability.

Overview of Copyright and Fair Use  Intellectual property rights, fair use and copyright within the higher education environment will be addressed in this seminar. While you can do a lot with technology, not all of it is considered fair use. Come join us for the discussion!

Lecture Capture with Mediasite  Mediasite is a lecture-capture technology that allows instructors to deliver multimedia course content for online classes with video, audio and content. Mediasite records classes, lectures or events and publishes them to a server for on-demand viewing anytime. At the same time, Mediasite can live-stream the same multimedia for synchronous online classes or live-viewing of events. This platform also has features for student interaction including polls and questions. This seminar will include an introduction to Mediasite, how it can broaden your teaching experience and an example of what students will see during a live-stream

Online Classes with Adobe Connect  Adobe Connect is a software application designed for use with online classes that connects students and teachers in a virtual room. This program allows the sharing of audio, video and content (PowerPoint, Desktop, or collaborative whiteboard) of up to 20 users. All you need to use Adobe Connect is a computer, webcam and an internet connection. This seminar will cover basic uses of Adobe Connect, an introduction to all the tools and features, an overview of the 3 levels of users, and a chance to participate in an Adobe Connect room, using only your computer.

Using Skype for Online Meetings and Discussions  Skype is a software application that allows you to video chat with other Skype users all over the world using only your computer, a webcam and an internet connection. This free program can be used for business meetings, interviews, or even student/instructor conferences. The seminar will cover the basics of using Skype, expectations for using Skype, and some recommendations of practices and equipment that can enable Skype to become a valuable tool
