Second Baccalaureate Students

The Nursing program is 5 semesters long or 2 ½ years.  This is a full-time program (13 hours most semesters) with most of the classes during the day.  As a second degree post-baccalaureate student the general education courses have been completed and do not need to be repeated.  However, students must complete the Nursing prerequisites and requirements listed below.

Admission to the Nursing Major

The Academic Affairs Committee has the responsibility of recommending students for admission or readmission to the nursing major. A limited number of students will be admitted each semester (Fall, Spring). Candidates will be considered for admission conditional upon meeting the following requirements:

  • Admitted to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga by the School of Nursing application deadline.
  • Completion and submission of the School of Nursing application by the application deadline.
  • Completion of all credit hours required for sophomore standing, including the prerequisite courses with no grade lower than a C.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for all college/university work.
  • Science GPA (calculated on required sciences only). The first grade earned in a required science course will be used to compute the student’s science GPA.
  • Sit for the ATI TEAS standardized examination, which is required and considered in the admission process. More information and a registration form are available at http://www.utc.edu/Academic/Nursing/TEAS.php.
  • Number of prerequisite courses completed at UTC
  • Applicants may be required to participate in an interview process
  • Physical and emotional characteristics appropriate for nursing practice.

Physical and emotional characteristics appropriate for nursing practice. The faculty representing the School of Nursing reserves the right to make exception to admission requirements. Admission to the Nursing major is limited. Admission to the University does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing major.

Program Requirements

  • Transcripts from high schools and all post-secondary education must be submitted at the time of application.
  • Eligibility to return to last educational institution (if appropriate) and meet UTC's continuation standards.
  • Enrollment in the nursing major is limited. Admission to the University does not ensure acceptance to the nursing major.
  • Students seeking the BSN should apply for admission to the University well in advance of the expected enrollment date and see the nursing advisor. Full information may be obtained from the Admissions Office and/or UTC Catalog.
