Professor Selected to Study Japanese Art and Culture

Stephen LeWinter, professor of art at UTC, is one of twenty participants from across the country selected to attend the Japan Institute at San Diego State University. LeWinter was awarded a Sasakawa Fellowship from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities to support his participation in the program.

“We are very proud of Professor LeWinter's selection. This honor acknowledges his contributions to the national and international art communities as both an artist and educator and brings recognition to our outstanding Art Department at UTC,” said Dr. John Friedl, provost of UTC.

LeWinter is anxiously anticipating an opportunity to investigate and study a historically influential country’s contributions to art and culture. “This influence continues today as Japan impacts so many areas including architecture, commerce, design, fashion, technology and the visual arts,” LeWinter said. LeWinter says he expects this learning experience will influence several of the art courses he teaches.

This is not the first time LeWinter has studied other cultures. With support from UTC, LeWinter has developed a dialogue with artists and educators in England, Israel, Germany and Spain. Through creative activity, research and teaching, LeWinter’s international relationships have allowed his students in advanced studio art classes to regularly participate in exhibits with their peers overseas.
