Rebecca Johnson, First Place

Eddie Smith, Second Place

Rebecca Johnson, a fourth grade student from Daisy Elementary had no idea why a group of adults from UTC visited her classroom recently, bearing cupcakes for her class and special prizes for her. Johnson had won the UTC Bookstore’s Bookmark Contest was selected as the first place winner.

The theme was “A Book is a Friend Forever.”

“Rebecca received $25 for winning first prize, and we reproduced and laminated her bookmark to be sold for $3 each, with proceeds to be donated to The Teacher Supply Depot,” according to Cheryl Penney, Assistant Manager of the bookstore.

The Teacher Supply Depot is a valuable resource for all educators in Hamilton County, allowing them to gather supplies and materials for their classrooms. It is a joint project of Hamilton County Council of PTAs and the school system, located inside Garber School on Roanoke Avenue.

Penney said when the UTC Bookstore moved to its current location in the newly renovated University Center last year, discontinued items were donated to the Teacher Supply Depot.

Eddie Smith, Areli Hernandez, and Tybresha Sexton, all third grade students at Brown Academy in Karen McCuiston’s class, won Second Place, Third Place and Honorable Mention respectively, for their entries. Hernandez and Sexton each won $15 for their efforts. McCuiston’s students created the bookmarks as part of a class project.

All Hamilton County elementary schools students in grades K-5 were invited to participate. Judging was based on creativity, individuality, originality, content and consistency with the theme.

All the winning bookmarks are on display at the UTC Bookstore, and while you are there, remember to pick up a laminated bookmark to support The Teachers Supply Depot.
