University costumer honored for work in Atlanta
University costume designer Sydney Lenoir Roberts was among those honored when Atlanta's Alliance Theatre became the recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award as an outstanding regional theater.
“I have designed at the Alliance Theatre for about five years,” Roberts said. “I do the Family series with Rosemary Newcott directing.”
The Alliance is only the second theater in the South to receive the Regional Theatre Tony Award. This award recognizes the Alliance's prestigious 39-year history of artistic achievement and the theatre's contribution to the growth of theatre nationally. It is a result of the sum of the theatre's programming and the community engagement it generates.
This award is given by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing and is accompanied by a $25,000 grant. The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) votes on the award, then makes its recommendation to the League of American Theatre and Producers.
“The award was housed in the theatre inner lobby where a special stand and glass box had been constructed,” Roberts said.
Roberts’ has had a productive career at the University, according to Mac Smotherman, faculty member in Theatre and Speech.
“Sydney has been our costumer for more than 20 years. She is a very accomplished professional designer whose work is known in Atlanta as well as around the country,” said Smotherman.
Plans are underway for Roberts to design costumes for Suessical: the Musical, to be presented at the Alliance February 23-March 23, 2008. Read more…
