Bono to wrestle for spot on U.S. World Team
UTC Head Wrestling Coach Chris Bono will be competing June 10 and 11 in Las Vegas for a spot on the U.S. World Team. If he places at the tournament, he will head to the Pan Am Games in Brazil, and then compete in the 2007 World Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In April, 2007, Bono claimed his third consecutive U.S. Freestyle National Championship at the 2007 U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. He entered the tournament seeded fourth in the 145.5 pound division. Bono has now won four overall U.S. Freestyle titles and he has competed in the World Team Trials three times, finishing as high as 11th in the world.
"It has been a dream of mine since I was little to be a world champion and an Olympic champion. That is a hard dream to give up,” Bono said.
In Bono's first season at UTC, the wrestling team won the Southern Conference title and qualified nine wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. In the thirty seasons UTC has competed at the Division I level, the Mocs had their best finish ever by placing 21st in the NCAA meet.
Bono’s ability to compete and win at the highest levels is impressive to his student wrestlers.
"I train the same way that I coach them to train. They see me winning at the highest level. They see that the system works, and they become a big believer in me," Bono said. “We have many recruits and current wrestlers who have their own dreams of being champions on this level. This level of wrestling is now a big part of the college scene."
