Relay Your Way for the American Cancer Society
Students Shamya Sermons and Lynne Moore are actively encouraging student groups to participate in Relay Your Way, as UTC brings the American Cancer Society Relay for Life to campus April 7 and 8.
“Colleges Against Cancer is a program that has had huge success on other campuses, and now we want to bring this event to UTC,” said Sermons. “We have over twenty groups signed up already, and we want more to participate.”
Relay Your Way will allow each group to express their creativity as they participate in the fight against cancer. Team members take turns walking or running. Each team is asked to have a representative active at all times of the event, because cancer never sleeps. Relay Your Way is an overnight event, beginning at 5 p.m. April 7 and ending at 7 a.m. April 8.
If you are unable to participate but you would like to contribute, consider writing a check made payable to the American Cancer Society and send it to 850 Fortwood Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee, 37403.
As Relay Your Way raises funds, the campaign also raises awareness of cancer prevention. Comprehensive cancer information is available online or by calling 1-800-227-2345.
One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, but Sermons says you do not have to be directly affected by cancer to participate.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to give people my age a chance to participate in an important fund-raising activity to fight,” Sermons said. “ Take up the fight with us!”
