New Zealand dance company to perform
Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre of New Zealand will be held Friday, September 29,
12-1 p.m. at the UTC University Center's Auditorium. Each year some 20 young Maori men and women travel to more than fifteen hundred schools, festivals and theaters throughout New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States working together as a family inspiring cultural development, understanding and community service.
They are the only professional Maori (indigenous New Zealanders) Dance company touring North America. The Ensemble performers in North America are graduates from the TAKITIMU Performing Arts School in Hastings, NZ, the first accredited institution in New Zealand to specialize in the instruction and preservation of the Maori Performing Arts.
The dance performance, People of the Pacific, retells the story of the migration of the Maori from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki, through the islands of Polynesia and concluding with the arrival of the Maori in their homeland of Aotearoa, New Zealand. This presentation features songs and dances from Tahiti, Hawaii, Samoa and New Zealand, is visually stimulating with the traditional regalia of each island, is highly educational and brilliantly entertaining. The program includes narrations for each island, plenty of audience participation, healthy doses of humor and enjoyment and a question & answer session at the conclusion.
