We got the beat!
Two programs in UTC’s cooperative Winter Pageantry Performance won awards in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit Championship held recently at the McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga Independent A received a Gold medal and Chattanooga Independent Open received a Silver Medal at Circuit Championships, an event including 158 units or schools with 3,000 participants from six states. The University entered four ensembles in the competition, headed by Dr. Stuart Benkert, Director of Bands, and directed by UTC students.
“The feat is remarkable for several reasons,” Benkert said. “It combined UTC student performers and high school performers in the same units, spanning 18 high schools in 3 states. The programs medaled in the first year of existence. And all four programs not only survived, but were competitively successful on a budget lower than the cost of one typical independent unit.”
With a quarter of a million spectators, the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit Championships is the single largest outreach program in the music department, providing approximately $300,000 in profit to the city of Chattanooga, as well as thousands of potential students to the University, according to Benkert.
Over the next month, the UTC units travel to world championships, where they will participate in global competition.
