Congratulations December graduates!

Paul Watson photoDr. Paul Watson, UC Foundation Professor & Head of the Department of Psychology, will deliver the commencement address to more than 530 graduates on Sunday, December 17, 2 p.m. in McKenzie Arena.

Watson received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Texas at El Paso and his doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington. He came to The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1977, and since joining the faculty, has taught a wide range of Psychology and University Honors courses.

Over 20,000 UTC students have taken Introductory Psychology from Watson in the large sections he teaches each semester. During the 1987-88 academic year, he was honored as Outstanding Teacher in the College of Arts and Sciences.  In 2006, he was named Outstanding Professor by the UTC Student Government Association and received the University of Tennessee Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award.

Previously, Watson served as Faculty Representative to the NCAA, a responsibility that included serving as President of the Southern Conference.

More than 175 of Watson’s professional papers have been published, many of which have had student coauthors. His research interests focus on personality theory and on the psychology of religion. His work in the psychology of religion has had an impact in both Christian and Muslim communities. In recent years, he has been invited to present papers at the national conventions of Christian organizations associated with psychology. A number of his research projects have also involved collaboration with Iranian and Pakistani colleagues, and his approach to the psychology of religion was recently analyzed in an article that appeared in the Journal of Religious Thought published by Shiraz University in Iran.

Watson maintains memberships in numerous professional organizations, is on the editorial boards of several journals, and serves as an Executive Editor of The Journal of Psychology: Interdisciplinary and Applied.  Watson and his wife Jackie are the proud parents of two children.
