Campus construction projects ongoing
Construction projects are continuing on campus, according to Janet Spraker, Director of Engineering Services at UTC.
"We actually have four major construction projects in progress that have an impact on pedestrian routes," Spraker said. "Contractors have been working furiously to get things in better shape before the start of classes, but a few key areas will still be blocked off."
- Pedestrian Mall Project – The Lupton Library lower garage (Lot 11) will be open for campus use beginning Saturday, August 19. Several of the sidewalks will be open between the University Center and Holt/Grote Halls. The UC entrance at the ATM, the Holt west entrance, and Grote Hall entrances on both sides of the auditorium will be open. To walk from the Oak Street side of campus up Cardiac Hill, pedestrians will have to go through the Library garage or Brock Hall.

Work will continue within the construction zone to complete the intersection plaza and the installation of irrigation lines and topsoil. Most of the major planting will not take place until later in the fall, but the new intersection plaza should be open to pedestrian traffic by October 15. We will try to open some additional pathways as soon as possible. Other possible alternate routes would be to use the Greenway path (sidewalk next to Fine Arts) or to go through Lot 3 (west end of Chamberlain Field).
- Brock Hall Roof Project – Brock is getting a new roof and some long-needed brick repairs. Scaffolding is in place on the north and south sides of the building, but all entrances remain open with pedestrian safety “tunnels” in place.
- Lupton Library Roof Replacement – This project is underway also, but the only impact the campus should see will be materials and dumpsters staged on the Vine Street side of the building, closing a portion of that sidewalk.
- Hooper Hall Renovation – Asbestos abatement is in progress. Pedestrian traffic is prohibited through Hooper Hall to get to Race or Founders. The handicapped access to Race and Founders is detoured to the sidewalk around Patten Chapel, and entrance to both buildings is available from the Quadrangle sidewalks. The elevator in Hooper will remain open throughout the project allowing access to Race Hall 2nd floor. These pedestrian detours are shown on the links provided above as well.
