Book discussion and signing scheduled
The Department of English in collaboration with the Chattanooga Writers Guild will hold a book discussion on Monday, February 20, 7 p.m. at the UTC University Center, Signal Mountain Room. This event is free and open to the public.
The discussion and book signing will feature Jeff Biggers, author of The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America. The UTC bookstore will have the author's book available for sale at the event and a signing will be held after the discussion.Jeff Biggers is an NPR contributor and author of The United States of Appalachia: How Southern Mountaineers Brought Independence, Culture and Enlightenment to America (Shoemaker and Hoard, 2006). He won an American Book Award last year as editor of No Lonesome Road, the selected works of Georgia poet Don West. His new book looks at the overlooked contributions of Appalachians in the vanguard of various American social movements. The book has a special connection to Chattanooga (including information about Adolph Ochs, Bessie Smith, and Grace Cooke), which the author will discuss at the reading.
