USSBA Tennessee Regional band competition held at Finley
Fourteen high school bands had an opportunity to visit Chattanooga and compete at Finley Stadium for the first-ever US Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) Tennessee Regional. The UTC Marching Mocs exhibition was well received, according to Dr. Stuart Benkert, Director of Bands.
“The crowd especially enjoyed the Jimi Hendrix music the UTC Marching Mocs played,” Benkert said.
Benkert serves as a head clinician for USSBA, a not-for-profit organization formed in fall 1988 that now boasts a membership of 400 participating high school bands. USSBA is a program funded by Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!), which seeks to “support the development of young people into magnificent human beings through participation in the performing arts.”
Approximately 3,000 people attended the event, and Benkert said although the budget was tight, the event brought in some revenue. It also brought a lot of potential UTC students to Chattanooga.
“It is important to bring high school band students to Chattanooga. The city is a major selling point for the University. Chattanooga is a youthful city, and when students come to visit, it is easy to imagine living in Chattanooga while they attend the University,” Benkert said.
Benkert anticipates next year’s event USSBA Tennessee Regional will be bigger, with approximately 25 high schools participating.Enjoy the photo gallery from the USSBA Tennessee Regional.
