UTC's Roberts designs costumes for Atlanta show

Sydney Roberts, costume designer for the Department of Theatre and Speech at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has designed costumes for Theatrical Outfit’s musical production of Hank Williams: Lost Highway in Atlanta.

Theatrical Outfit will present the hit musical Hank Williams: Lost Highway evenings 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinee 2:30 p.m. through June 12 to close the company’s first season in its new home at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s. The show follows Hank Sr.’s life from his teen years through his successful years, and finally to his untimely death at age 29.

“This is a really great show; I am sure there are Hank Williams fans out there who would like to see it,” said Roberts.

Roberts is also designing costumes for the Georgia Shakespeare Festival 2005 Summer Festival performance of The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, which opens June 10. She has been designing costumes for the Georgia Shakespeare Festival since 2002. Roberts has designed costumes for Alliance Theatre Company, Atlanta (2004- The Miracle Worker, 2003- Merlin, 2001- Androcles and the Lion) and Portland Center Stage, Portland, Oregon (2003- Man and Superman, 2002- The Seagull, 2001- Portland Theatre Award, Costume Design, 2000- The Devils).Additionally, Roberts has designed costumes for Actor’s Express, Atlanta and Synchronicity Performance Group, Atlanta

Since 1984, Roberts has been the Costume Designer and Shop Manager for the UTC Department of Theatre and Speech. She has designed over 80 shows at the University, ranging from classic works by Shakespeare and Moliere to modern plays by Miller, Havel, and Naomi Wallace. In the 2004-2005 season, Roberts provided her expertise for The Fantasticks, Blithe Spirit, and Art.

Roberts earned the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from the University of Texas, Austin. There she received the Morton Brown Award for Design and the Drama Ex-Students Award for Design.
