Signing ceremony to open student exchange with Korean university

In an effort to expand the international education program at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, UTC Interim Chancellor Fred Obear and Kangnung National University (English version) President Dr. Song Han of Gangneung, South Korea, signed a bilateral exchange agreement between the two campuses in the Foundation Room of the University Center.

Through the agreement, the exchange program between the institutions will also provide language support for participants.

“The signing of this agreement signifies an exciting period in the relationships between our two cities and our two universities,” said Dr. Song Han. “I look forward to this agreement bearing fruit for many years to come.”

Community leaders fromGangneung were in Chattanooga for a week to formalize Sister City agreements designed to lead a broad spectrum of exchanges, cooperative activities, and economic activity. Gangneung became Chattanooga’s fifth Sister City two years ago, after the partnership was formalized in the South Korean city of 230,000 people, located 150 miles east of Seoul.

“Earlier this year, UTC hosted 15 students from Gangneung for a five week English Language Institute that gave the students good exposure to UTC, our faculty, students, and the opportunities UTC can offer them were they to choose to return for further study,” said Hugh Prevost, UTC director of cooperative education and international student exchange programs.

“Dr. Obear and Dr. Song Han have signed a formal exchange agreement that will open the door to more student, faculty and cultural exchanges and joint research opportunities between the two universities,” he said.
