New TLT Fellows named at UTC

Teaching, Learning & Technology (TLT) Faculty Fellows.

- Obasi Akan, Assistant Professor, Management, Business Administration;
- Dr. Joyce Smith, Assistant Professor, English;
- Dr. Gavin Townsend, Art; and
- Sandy Watson, Assistant Professor, Teaching Preparation Academy, Health, Education & Professional Studies.
Funding for the Faculty Fellows Program is provided by the University of Chattanooga Foundation, UTC Center of Excellence for Computer Applications and UTC Walker Teaching Resource Center.
The TLT Faculty Fellows Program encourages the development of faculty experts in a variety of teaching, learning and technology topics and issues. Faculty Fellows serve as models to other UTC faculty on the use of effective teaching and learning strategies. They provide support to faculty in the CECA Computer Curricular Integration Lab (CCI Lab) and the Walker Teaching Resource Center.
Faculty participants will explore the following topics:
- Obasi Haki Akan: Interaction of verbal behavior and collaborative learning, role of conversation in learning and effective work group practices.
- Dr. Joyce Smith: Plagiarism, how to detect, design assignments, deal with it, etc. Will include definitions, parameters of plagiarism, monitoring the writing process to decrease chances.
- Dr. Gavin Townsend: Incorporating digital imagery, technology and changing pedagogy (collaboration, group projects) into Art courses; design of digital "learning objects."
- Sandy Watson (TPA,) Topic: Electronic mentorship, promoting interactive electronic dialogue with mentors, students, etc. to increase knowledge of teaching pedagogy.
Overall, the program is designed to help selected faculty to:
- Broaden research skills into the area of scholarship of teaching,
- Develop skills in instructional and curriculum design,
- Prepare and facilitate seminars for the UTC campus on issues and topics related to the scholarship of teaching, learning, and technology,
- Develop skills with software tools to design meaningful integration of technology into the classroom,
- Provide support for activities in the CECA CCI Lab and the Walker Teaching Resource Center, and
- Serve as visible and exemplary models of teaching and technology integration in the curriculum.
