UTC APPOINTS NEW SUNTRUST CHAIR OF EXCELLENCE
A Tulane University history professor who recently completed a year-long appointment at Georgetown University has been named by UTC Provost Bill Berry as the university's SunTrust Chair of Excellence in Humanities.
Dr. Bill McClay was an assistant professor of history at Tulane from 1987-93, before becoming an associate professor. Last year he was appointed to the Royden B. Davis Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies at Georgetown. The Davis Chair was created to "honor individuals distinguished in the humanities, arts, sciences, or social sciences with a year's residence at the University."
"We're delighted at the appointment of Bill McClay as chairholder of the SunTrust Chair," said Berry. "He is an exceptional young scholar with the promise to become one of the country's leading intellectual historians. He is a valuable addition not only to the campus, but also to the community of Chattanooga. He is strongly committed to fulfilling the public outreach functions of the SunTrust Chair.
The Humanities Chair, which is funded by a $333,000 grant from SunTrust bank, $167,000 from the University of Chattanooga Foundation and matching state funds, was established in 1986 "to challenge individuals by presenting the best that has been and is now being thought in the humanities disciplines.
