Prepare for your visit:
Lots of people get nervous and their minds go blank in health care situations, so it may be helpful to prep a little. You can make the best use of your time by writing down questions and bringing them to your visit. A few more things to keep in mind before your visit:

  • If this will be your first Pap or Pelvic Exam – please read this handout “Explaining the Pap & Pelvic Exam
  • You should not be menstruating on the day of the exam – please call (423) 425-2266 to reschedule.
  • Know the date of the first day of your last menstrual period.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse, tampons, douching, and vaginal medications for at least 2 days prior to your visit.
  • Thinking about starting birth control but want to talk to someone about all of your options first? Contact Carol Oglesby, SHS Assistant Director, at or (423) 425-2337 and/or visit for more information.
