Partnerships for Students [Teaching and Learning]

Create partnerships that provide distinctive educational experiences for students both in the classroom and beyond, lead to meaningful engagement between students and all other members of the University community, and enhance students’ commitment to The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Because freshmen retention predicts progress to graduation, UTC has been disappointed in the last five years with the decrease in persistence from the fall to spring semesters of the freshmen year, to the sophomore year, and to graduation. With the appointment of a senior faculty member to the position of assistant provost for retention and the hiring of a consultant experienced in the use of statistics to drive intervention strategies, the University experienced this year an improvement in second semester retention.

Although a hallmark of a UTC education as been extensive opportunities for experiential learning, a concerted effort was never made to quantify these opportunities until this plan. These experiences might include internships, student learning, clinical placements, research projects (either as part of a class or in conjunction with a faculty member), etc. First year results are included.
