Student interns will be jointly selected by UNSP Co-PIs and the TN Aquarium’s Education department for eight weeks during the summer months of June and July. These interns will be known as TASIs (Tennessee Aquarium Summer Interns). The Tennessee Aquarium is accredited as a supplementary education school by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). TASIs will work specifically with the Tennessee Aquarium’s education staff to develop and deliver national and state (AL, GA & TN) standards-based educational programs associated with their River and Ocean Journey attractions and the River Gorge Explorer. In addition, TASIs will aid in the development of home school curricula, including discovery boxes (take-home materials and resources for exploring science in the home school setting), hands-on laboratory and field experiences for K-12 students, and content for the TN Aquarium’s Electronic Naturalist website for natural science education.
Priority will be given to exceptionally talented students who demonstrate academic merit through both cumulative and content-based GPA, (2) Consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need, (3) Consideration will also be given to those individuals identified as underrepresented in the STEM disciplines. Awards will usually be made in early spring for the following summer. TASI recipients who fall below the minimum GPA requirements will be notified and will lose their funding. When reviewing application packets and interview results, special consideration will be given to individuals identified as minorities, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented individuals relative to specific teaching areas (e.g., women in physics).
Application Deadline: January 30th
