POLICY:

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga shall maintain a program to provide for protection of the environment. A program will be established in industrial hygiene, sanitation and food services and preparation. The Safety Officer will act as a consultant and a resource regarding compliance with code and regulations and will perform inspections as may be necessary.

It is also the responsibility of the UTC Safety Officer to ensure that any appropriate federal, state or local licenses are obtained when the need is determined by the Office of Safety and Risk Management.

PROCEDURE:

  1. SANITATION
The University through the Facilities Management staff has set forth standards in housekeeping and is regularly inspected by the custodial supervisor. These standards include:
    1. Daily emptying of trash from inside and outside of all buildings.
    2. The use of germicidal cleaners in restrooms and drinking fountains.
    3. The control of vermin by a commercially certified campus exterminator.
    4. Regular cleaning and changing of filters in air-handling units.
Food service inspections are performed by the Hamilton County Health Department, governed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

  2. ASBESTOS AND LEAD CONTROL
There are no in-house means of dealing with small quantities of asbestos and lead. Abatements are dealt with by engineering firms designated by the State Building Commission and are contracted by abatement specification handled exclusively through the office of Safety and Risk Management.

  3. HAZARDOUS WASTE
Any department needing to dispose of hazardous waste will properly separate chemicals by class and store the materials in appropriate waste containers.

    Hazardous Waste Inventory
Each container will be labeled with the following information:

    Department nameChemical constituents
    Individual generating wasteHazard classification
    Date waste accumulation beganType material
    Quantity of materialTechnical contact

    Hazardous Waste Disposal
After the materials are separated and labeled, a hazardous waste removal form will be completed and submitted to the Department of Safety and Risk Management. This information will then be sent out on bid for removal.

  4. PESTICIDES
All pesticides are handled exclusively by a certified exterminator on campus. All FIFRA guidelines are complied with and monitored by the Safety Office.

  5. LICENSES
The Department of Safety and Risk Management will reserve the right to audit all applicable departments on campus to ensure that proper licenses are maintained.

  6. AIR EMISSIONS
UT Chattanooga maintains only one air emissions permit at this time. This is for stack emissions at the Central Energy Plant.

  7. PERMITTED WASTEWATER DISCHARGE
There is no permitted wastewater discharge on the campus at this time.
