UTC Graduation Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are tickets required to attend a graduation ceremony at UTC?

Tickets are not required to attend a graduation ceremony at UTC. Graduation ceremonies are held in UTC's McKenzie Arena. All guest seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

 Q: When are degrees awarded at UTC? 

Degrees are awarded at the end of the fall (December), spring (May), and summer (August) semesters.

Students must apply for Graduation to be considered a candidate for a degree. Graduation ceremonies are only held in December and May. 

  Q: When are graduation ceremonies held?

Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the fall (in December) semester and the spring (in May) semesters.  Specific dates can be located on the online Academic Calendar.

Q: Can I walk in the upcoming Graduation ceremony, even though I'm not completing my degree requirements until the next term? 

If you are wishing to participate in a ceremony other than the term in which you plan to graduate, please apply to graduate in the term you will finish your degree requirements, then submit a Request to Walk form. Refer to Graduation Participation Guidelines for further information. 

Q: How long do the graduation ceremonies typically last?

Undergraduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 2 hours.
Graduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 1 and 1/2 hours. 

 Q: Where do I get my cap and gown?

Cap and Gowns are purchased through the UTC Bookstore. The phone number for the book store is (423) 425-4107.

Q: If I graduate in August, will my name appear in a commencement program? 

Names of all August graduates will be published in the December Commencement program. The May Commencement program will list all August candidates who have applied by April 1st.
