Grote Hall and the surrounding area have been thoroughly checked. The building will reopen for operation on Tuesday, November 25. All classes and operations return to a normal schedule.
The cause of the sinkhole near Grote Hall was a broken section of storm water piping that serves Holt Hall. The sinkhole appears to be confined to the lawn area between Grote and Holt Halls. Based on the type of foundation construction for Grote, our structural engineering consultant is confident of the structural integrity of the building.
Repairs to the storm drainage system and sidewalks and filling of the hole are expected to take several days but pose no threat to the building or passersby.
Faculty members may re-schedule at their discretion classes that did not meet on Monday due to the closing of Grote Hall. Faculty should work with their department head and dean to reschedule classes. Records can assist with room schedules. Faculty members who choose to reschedule classes should communicate that decision and the accommodations directly to students in their classes.
