HR 128 is a Human Resources Policy, strongly encouraging every employee at the University of Tennessee to complete a minimum of 32 hours of job- and career-related training per calendar year. HR 128 applies to exempt and non-exempt employees, regular, full and part time. 

With supervisor’s approval, classes both within and outside the university will count toward your 32 hours. Conferences and seminars attended will also count. To receive credit for classes, you will fill out the interactive form “Request for Additional Credit." Once this form is completed, send it to the Human Resources office for entering into the IRIS data base. View Frequently Asked Questions about HR 128.

How can I view a record of training that I've attended?

A new feature is now available to display an employee’s qualifications and training history in IRIS using the transaction PA20. This information is available on the Education/Tenure tab in the Skills category. Both qualifications information and training history information are entered in the Skills category, but a green checkmark only indicates that one or more qualifications have been entered for the employee. If no qualifications have been entered, no checkmark will appear even though an employee may have training history data. Qualifications are displayed on the Qualifications tab. The employee’s training history is displayed on the Individual Development tab.


Career Development Fund
The Career Development Fund was established and is maintained by the gifts and donations of UTC employeees through the University's Annual Giving Program. The continuation of the fund depends upon the support of UTC employees. Employees are encouraged to apply to the fund for assistance when they believe participation in a program of activity will contribute to their professional growth. The application process must be completed in advance of the program or activity. To be eligible to participate, an applicant must be a regular, non-exempt employee of UTC for at least one year. The Career Development Fund Committee consisting of UTC employees appointed by the Chancellor, reviews requests and approves funding for those activities which fall within the guidelines.

Communication Certification

The Office of Human Resources in collaboration with the UT Office of Employee & Organizational Development (EOD) will offer a Communication Certification for staff members who are interested in communication skills training. This certification is conferred following 32 hours of specialized communications-oriented training, normally delivered over the course of one or two years. Participants will start the certification process by taking the core class of “Introduction to Communication." Enrollment is first respond, first reserved basis and limited to 25 attendees with supervisor’s approval. Employees not interested in certification may attend individual sessions as space allows. Computer Based Training

The University has access to a broad range of training resources through Computer Based Training (CBT) which is readily accessible and free of charge to all UTC faculty and staff. Computer Based Training is an interactive method of learning that provides a series of self-paced, hands-on, web-based courses. CBT offers technology, managerial, and supervisory curricula. Technology curricula contains courses for IT beginners and IT professionals. Technology courses include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), Macromedia, Adobe, Security, Internet basics, and advanced topics such as JavaScript, C, Linux, Servers, and open systems. Managerial and Supervisory curricula contain courses for Business Skills, Human Resources, and Workplace Compliance.

The Human Resources Training Lab, 209 Race Hall, is available for employees who wish to use CBT provided no other training is scheduled at that time. Please view the Training Lab Calendar as it is updated daily.

If you choose to take a test at the end of your training and score at least 70%, you may print a certificate online or request a certificate of successful completion. By acquiring certificates, you can add these certified computer skills to your resume or vita. CBT courses may be used to fulfill UT's HR 128 training policy. Send the certificate and a completed "Request for Additional Credit" form to the Human Resources office for entering into the IRIS data base.


IRIS Training
IRIS stands for Integrated R/3 Information System. R/3 is a business software package used by the University for accounting, purchasing, budgeting, and human resources functions. In order to obtain an IRIS user ID/password, an employee must attend an IRIS Overview session and at least one functional module. Contact Melanie Sadler to register for classes.
Model-Netics
Model-Netics presents a broad range of organizational and managerial concepts through models which function as guides to individual thought and action.  Understanding and use of the models enables participants to effectively leverage knowledge gained from the program with past experience to improve communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills. The program is comprehensive and organized around ten topical sessions that cover the full range of administrative responsibilities and concerns. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Attendees will receive 40 hours training credit under UT Policy HR 128. Contact Dan Webb or Melanie Sadler for more information. Classes will be held in Spring, 2009 in the University Center.
 

Supervisory/Management Training
The Office of Human Resources in collaboration with the UT Office of Employee & Organizational Development (EOD) has developed a training program to provide various resources for managers, directors, and department heads in performing their jobs. Program topics include Legal Aspects of Management, Creating a Respectful Workplace, Improving Employee Conduct, Communication/Listening Skills, Dealing with Change, Teambuilding, Organizational Culture, Preventing Sexual Harassment, and various administrative procedures such as Fiscal Policies Overview, etc. Training is delivered during a two-year period with certification being achieved after 64 hours of training. Employees not interested in certification may attend individual sessions as space allows. Contact Melanie Sadler to register. Registration is required. Classes begin June 18. new
